Below is my last Job Specification as a Permanent Employee. I have since then branched out into Management Consulting.

This position was mid-senior management level, focused on managing complex programs and organisational development. I mentored and coached other middle managers, and talked strategy and direction with senior management, MANCO/EXCO level.

Manager: Decoder Strategic Planning,  BTD - Decoder Product Development


CONTEXT
  • BTD is a division of Multichoice within the Naspers Group. DPD is a department within BTD that is responsible for all decoder product development for Multichoice.
  • An experienced manager is required to drive strategic decoder planning efforts with project teams and vendors

Management
Manages and delivers complex projects: End-to-end programme with multiple project streams
Proactively manages, plans & delivers new technologies/features (strategic initiatives) to business
Manages project managers (direct & indirect) responsible for individual work streams
Manages the programme:
  • Defines programme road map with the MCA & impacted Vendors
  • Manages interdependencies between projects
  • Gains Approval of project plans including changes from MCA Senior Stakeholders
  • Reviews progress of projects (internal and with Vendors)
  • Arbitrates and resolves conflicts within the projects under one’s responsibility
  • Drives the Architect team to produce required project deliverables

Manages Project Managers:
  • Defines and assigns high level program tasks and priorities to project managers
  • Manages and motivates the project team and organization to ensure timely and efficient delivery

Relationships
Acts as escalation point for unresolved project issues
Promotes Knowledge sharing across projects & Dev/SI teams in MCA
Actively involved in all project scope and delivery negotiations with Vendors Responsible for vendor/supplier relationship at the project scope level
Negotiates responsibilities and requirements within MCA, Vendors and 3rd parties
Works to obtain commitment from Vendors, MCA and 3rd parties involved
Shares project information with other affected MCA projects
Gathers information on project dependencies across MCA
Oversees communication channels among all relevant internal and external parties for the project
Is the main contact point for the Vendors/Suppliers at the project scope level
Manages high level project plan and execution, depending on individual project managers to manage the detail
Takes corrective actions in order to mitigate any deviation from agreed upon plan
Holds regular meetings and conference calls with vendors/suppliers
Travel, Participate & contribute to conferences to build professional network – budget permitting
Manage the supplier relationship by regular face-to-face meetings, requires overseas travel
Extend relationships outside of BTD promoting BTD projects across Multichoice Group
Build relationships with new suppliers and technology providers

Quality
Initiates and promotes development of infrastructure for the benefit of MCA's projects
Defines processes to be used in the programme (collaborative effort)
Leads improvements inside the programme to drive through efficiency & productivity measures
Adheres to industry best processes, such as, quality test plan , development plans inside/outside MCA
Inputs to the requirements management process such that requirements of sufficient detail and clarity are delivered on time to the development teams.
Inputs to the product management team such that adequate change management processes are in place to effectively quantify and manage changes in terms of risk, budget and timeline
Ensures Configuration management practices are in place
Manages the project flow according to accepted procedures
Ensures risks management practices are in place
Ensures product management team provide quality documentation
Ensures build/release/configuration management processes are in place
Ensures communication plan is in place
Removes ambiguity and obstacles impeding progress
Identify & Drive through process improvements
Actively manage the SI release decisions at key milestone stages of the project

Strategic Projects Initiation
Ensures preparation and review of Business requirements from a program perspective
Review of technical open issues from previous deliveries
Ensures preparation of technical/architecture solution with Technical teams
Agree 3rd party systems interfaces and deliverables with the Vendors (e.g-STB. chipset, DSTVO, Irdeto)
Manage handover and integration of POC projects into internal mainstream product development
Manage handover and integration of POC projects into Vendor product development
Initiate and follow-through POC RFPs

Strategic Projects Process
Prepares/contributes to Project charter
Gather and review lessons learned from previous projects
Prepare project kick off document
Prepares and leads Kick off Meetings (including MCA pre kick off meeting)
Ensures that risks are Identified & Managed
Ensures Identification of SMC labs infrastructure and plan implementation
Ensures project managers manage availability of long lead items
Ensures dependent project managers have agreed upon processes in place
Ensures dependent project managers provide regular feedback and status reports

Ensures preparation and review of functional and non functional requirements and system architecture spec
